How to Make Chipotle Tofu Tacos

Step 1: Press the Tofu

Wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy pan on top for about 20–30 minutes to remove excess moisture. This helps create crispier tofu.

Step 2: Season the Tofu

In a large bowl, toss the tofu cubes with the chipotle adobe sauce, nutritional yeast, soy sauce, olive oil, lime juice, paprika, onion powder and garlic powder.

Step 3: Bake the Tofu

Spread the tofu onto a parchment lined baking sheet.

Bake the tofu for 30 minutes, turning occasionally until golden brown and crispy on all sides.

Step 4: Make the Cilantro Lime Coleslaw

In a large bowl, combine the purple cabbage and cilantro.

Whisk together the mayonnaise, lime juice, lime zest, olive oil and cumin.

Pour the dressing over the vegetables and toss until evenly coated.

Allow the slaw to chill for 10 minutes before serving.

Step 5: Assemble the Tacos

Warm the tortillas.

Fill each tortilla with crispy chipotle tofu, top generously with cilantro lime coleslaw, and finish with avocado, pickled onions, fresh cilantro, and a squeeze of lime.

Serve immediately.

Tips for the Best Tofu Tacos

  • Use extra-firm tofu rather than soft tofu.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan while cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these tacos ahead of time?

Yes. Prepare the tofu and coleslaw in advance, then assemble the tacos just before serving for the best texture.

Is tofu healthy?

Tofu is an excellent source of plant-based protein and contains iron, calcium (when calcium-set), and essential amino acids. It’s a nutritious addition to a balanced diet.

Can I bake the tofu instead of frying?

Absolutely. Baking or air frying creates a crispy texture with less oil while still delivering delicious flavor.

What tortillas work best?

Both corn and flour tortillas work well. Corn tortillas provide a traditional flavor, while flour tortillas are softer and more flexible.
