There’s something timeless about pulling a tray of warm, golden dinner rolls out of the oven. The smell alone can turn an ordinary evening into something special. Whether it’s a holiday feast, a Sunday supper, or just a cozy weeknight meal, homemade dinner rolls bring comfort to the table like nothing else.
In this post, I’ll walk you through why homemade rolls are worth it, tips for getting them perfectly fluffy, and a reliable recipe you can use again and again.

Making bread at home can seem like a time-consuming task, but I find it to be one of the most rewarding things to create in the kitchen. There’s something deeply satisfying about starting with just a handful of simple ingredients—flour, yeast, water, salt—and transforming them into something warm, fragrant, and nourishing. The process itself becomes part of the reward: mixing the dough, feeling it come together beneath your hands, kneading it until it turns smooth and elastic, and watching it slowly rise as the yeast works its quiet magic.
Baking bread invites you to slow down. In a world that often feels rushed and instant, bread requires patience. You can’t hurry the rise or skip the resting time without sacrificing texture and flavor. That gentle waiting period becomes almost meditative, a reminder that good things take time. And when the loaf finally comes out of the oven—golden brown with a crisp crust and a soft, airy interior—the sense of accomplishment is unmatched.
Beyond the satisfaction, there’s also comfort in the aroma that fills the kitchen. The smell of freshly baked bread has a way of making a house feel like home. It draws people in, sparks conversation, and turns an ordinary meal into something memorable. Even a simple slice with butter feels special when you’ve made it yourself.
While store-bought bread certainly has its place, homemade bread carries a personal touch that can’t be replicated. Each loaf reflects your hands, your timing, and your care. For me, that connection—between effort and outcome—is what makes bread baking not just a task, but a truly fulfilling experience.

Sesame Seed Dinner Rolls
Ingredients
- 3 cups bread flour
- 1 1/2 tsp dry active yeast
- 2 1/2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp warm milk sub for soy milk
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 3 tbsp butter sub for vegan butter
- 1 egg OR 1 tbsp soy milk for brushing over the buns
- Black and white sesame seeds optional
Instructions
- Add the milk to a small saucepan over low heat. You want the milk to warm up but do not let it get hot or this will kill the yeast.
- Add the water and yeast and allow to sit for a few minutes until some bubbles form. If no bubbles form, the yeast is too old and can’t be used.
- Next, stir in the oil to the frothy milk mixture.
- In a large bowl add the flour, sugar, salt and combine.
- Add milk mixture to the flour mixture and knead until a dough forms. Cover with damp cloth for 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size.
- After the dough has risen, add the cold butter (chopped into pieces) and knead until the butter is combined. This will take some time so be patient.
- Place dough ball into bowl coated with oil, cover with a damp cloth and rest for 1 hour.
- Turn over onto floured surface and divide into 8 buns. Cover again for 20 mins.
- Using a pastry brush, coat each bun with egg or soy milk. Sprinkle over some sesame seeds.
- Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.
- Remove the buns from the oven and allow to cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
